I’m Raising 5 Kids in NYC – Here’s My Family’s Secret to Surviving on $6,000 a Month

Seven is heaven – when you have two apartments.

A NYC mother of five has sparked controversy after sharing her family’s Big Apple survival secret on social media.

Kristi — known on TikTok as @kristiipartyof6 — is a content creator who moved to the city four years ago, where she lives most of the year with her husband, who works in financial technology.

Kristi — known online as @kristiipartyof6 — revealed that she and her husband rent a $6,000-a-month second apartment in New York City in addition to their $12,000-a-month primary apartment.

Along for the ride are their five children — one from each parent’s previous relationship and three together.

After struggling to fit everyone into their $12,000-a-month 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment, and scrambling to find something bigger and better, the couple came up with a solution—the rent a second unit, $6,000 per month at same. luxury building.

And not only is it in the same building, but it’s across the hall.

The listing came up after their neighbor decided to move out.

I texted my husband and said, ‘I think I just found our solution,'” Kristi told People.

After the family welcomed their fifth child this summer, they agreed they needed more space to live and let the kids play.

The second apartment is now used to store clothes, shoes, children’s winter coats, scooters and prams – along with all the children’s toys. The master bedroom is already a nursery, while the main living space is a giant playroom.

The family also uses the second apartment to do laundry.

“With seven people in our family, we do a ton of laundry,” Kristi noted, adding that having a second refrigerator is also another big help, “because, again, we’re a big family.”

They store many of their belongings in the second apartment, including groceries. They make most of their clothes in space.

The new space has also given the family an opportunity to welcome visitors – something many New Yorkers can only dream of.

“We’ve also been able to host family and friends visiting us in New York,” Kristi explained.

“The second apartment gives them a place to stay near us, but not in our actual living space. It has been really helpful for our large family living in the city.”

However, Kristi said that while her followers are usually excited about what she shares, many people have questioned and judged the decision.

While Kristi said her followers tend to be supportive of her posts, sharing these details with fans sparked a lot of questions and judgmental comments.

“I think people who live in New York get it,” she said. “They understand, but I think it’s people who live outside of New York that I get so many comments like, ‘Oh, what you pay in a month is what I pay in a whole year, and I own my house. ” or “This is my mortgage.”

“People just said it was useless and too expensive to ‘storage,'” Kristi continued, noting that she calls it a storage unit because that’s how her husband refers to the space.

“And the truth of the matter is that it is. We use it a lot for storage and it’s a very expensive storage unit,” she said.

“I realize it really wouldn’t work for most people, but I feel very lucky that it works well for our big family.”

The family also owns a large house on half an acre in Utah, which they built in 2017, where they spend the summer and a few weeks every February or March. But they love their NYC apartment setting.

“Once you find the apartment you love and then really build your community, it’s really, really hard to leave,” she said.

“I know we could get a bigger apartment elsewhere in the city and pay less than we do now, but the community is a really big deal to us. This is our home. This is our community, this is where our friends are, and it’s really hard to leave.”
